Ancient texts predict modern tragedies:

And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:11, NKJV

When natural disasters strike, survivors inevitably are left stunned and baffled. "How could this happen?" is a question commonly pondered after such horrific events take place.

Scientists scurry in desperate attempts to explain how such fatal happenings occur, and humans absorb the information like sponges. The end result seems to always be the same: Mother Nature did it.

Obviously no human has the capability to spin tornadoes, strike lightning bolts, or unleash violent hurricanes. We can make nuclear bombs and other destructive weapons, but the disasters of the earth are beyond our comprehension.

There is an obvious higher power behind the chain of events that cause earthquakes to shake the ground and volcanoes to spontaneously burst into eruption. "Mother Nature" is just an alias given to the powerful and awesome acts of Father God.

I am not saying that God is killing all these people through natural disasters for fun. According to the Bible, we live in a fallen world. From the moment in Genesis 3 that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, the earth was cursed.

"Then to Adam [God] said, 'Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it':

'Cursed is the ground for your sake;

'In toil you shall eat of it

'All the days of your life.

'Both thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you,

'And you shall eat the herb of the field.

'In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread

'Till you return to the ground,

'For out of it you were taken;

'For dust you are,

'And to dust you shall return,'" Genesis
3:17-19.

The Bible provides prophecies that connect natural disasters to the final days of the earth.

Matthew 24:7-8 states, "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows."

And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:11, NKJV

Luke 21:11 reinforces those warnings.

"And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven."

Luke 21:25-26 foreshadowed the recent tsunami that pounded the shores of
South Asia.

"And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; mens hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken."

These enormous events always seem to sneak up on people. Could it be that God is preparing people for His return?

"But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect," Matthew 24:43-44.

Over the past year, it seems that there have been more reports of natural disasters than ever. They never come at a good time, and the outcomes always are devastating. But when you look beyond the ruins and ravages left in the path of the birth pangs of the world, it seems as if God is sending mankind a wake-up call. His message is not to hit the snooze button, but to be ready for His second coming.
